GRIMES, Iowa – Sep. 3, 2020 – Ongoing construction work at the Interstate 35/80 and Iowa 141 “Urban Loop interchange” in Grimes will require permanently closing the connection between 41st Street and Iowa 141 in Grimes starting Wednesday night, Sept. 9, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes construction office.
This permanent closure is necessary to allow the new flyover ramp to merge with Iowa 141 at this location. Leaving the intersection open would create an unsafe condition with the merging traffic. Motorists wishing to access the businesses in this area of Grimes are encouraged to continue north and turn right on 37th Street. A right turn off 37th Street at either Southeast Grimes Boulevard (behind Quick Trip) or Southeast Capital Circle will allow access to this commercial area.
Also, on the evening of Sept. 9, the inside lane of westbound Iowa 141 will reopen and the two outside lanes will close for approximately one and one half weeks while crews connect the new flyover pavement to existing westbound Iowa 141 pavement. The single lane on westbound Iowa 141 may cause significant backups on Iowa 141 during busy times of day and drivers are encouraged to consider using alternate routes.
The new dual left-turn lanes on both directions of Iowa 141 at 37th Street will also reopen on the evening of Sept. 9 as well.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
