Boards & Commissions Application

  1. Demographic Information: The City of Grimes desires to have diverse representation on the City’s boards and commissions to reflect the age, race/ethnicity and gender of the Grimes community. The City acknowledges the requirements of Iowa Code 69.16A to achieve gender balance on the City’s boards and commissions that are created by state law. The City also desires to go beyond state requirements and achieve gender balance on all City boards and commissions, regardless of whether the board/commission is created by Iowa Code or City Code. 

  2. Please indicate the boards and/or commissions that interest you by checking the appropriate boxes below. Appointments are generally made at the first Council meeting in January of each year; however, vacancies often occur throughout the year. After you application has been reviewed, you may be contacted by a City representative to discuss your interest in volunteering.

  5. Board of Adjustment:

    Meets as needed to consider requests for variances and use permits, or to hear appeals of interpretation of the Zoning Ordinance. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Development Services Department. 

  6. Board of Appeals

    The Board of Appeals is a multi-code review board. that consists of at least five members.

  7. Building Code Appeals Board:

    Meets as needed to consider requests for variances or to hear appeals of interpretation of the Building and Fire Codes. The Board is staffed by the Development Services Department. 

  8. Library Board:

    Meets once a month to advise the City Council on Library issues. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Library Department. 

  9. Parks and Recreation Board:

    Meets once a month to advise Council and develop park plans, programs and budget. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Parks and Recreation Department. 

  10. Planning and Zoning:

    Meets regularly each month to review and make recommendations to the Council concerning zoning, site plans and plat development. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Development Services Department. 

  11. Public Health and Safety:

    Meets once a month to promote the health and safety needs of the community. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Public Works Department. 

  12. Tree Board

    Meets once a month Advisory Board to the City Council promote the growth and development of tree programs. The Board of Adjustment is staffed by the Parks and Recreation Department.
