Grimes Iowa Becomes Home Base Iowa Community

Governor Branstad Announced Grimes as the 19th Home Base Iowa Community

Gov. Terry Branstad congratulated the community of Grimes, Iowa, on achieving the Home Base Iowa Community designation. The designation was given to Grimes at an event attended by Governor Branstad at the AmericInn Lodge and Suites in Grimes.

Home Base Iowa connects transitioning military members and veterans with career opportunities in Iowa companies. The state of Iowa has a lot to offer veterans and transitioning service members including no state taxes on military pension, a cost of living below the national average and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. To date, members of the Iowa Business Council, Iowa’s largest employers, have hired more than 1,300 employees through Home Base Iowa.

Local City Government Incentives

In support of the local Home Base Iowa initiative, and military veterans in general, the Grimes City Council adopted a number of valuable incentives aimed toward the recruitment and retention of veterans of the Unites States military.  A summary of these municipal incentives are as follows:

Building Permit Fees Waived/Refunded
The building permit fee for all new homes or home remodels shall be waived or refunded upon purchase of a new home. (Water and sewer connection fees are not refundable) This also includes Decks, Fences, Sheds, and Pools.

***Home must have been purchased after August 11, 2015 to qualify for rebate.***
After the purchase of a home, a tax rebate of up to $1000 of the portion paid to the city each year for the first five years. The check shall be issued in November of each year upon receiving proof of the paid tax receipt by the veteran showing that the taxes for his/her home have been paid and are current. Veteran must reside at property.

   
Free Garbage and Recycling Services
Free garbage and recycling pick up for all veterans who are homeowners.
   
Free Fire & EMS Services
The City will waive any and all fire and EMS fees incurred by the veteran or immediate family members.  (fees waived are fees due after submitting bill to insurance)
   
Grimes Park & Rec program credits
Veterans will receive $200 credit per year towards any Parks & Recreation programs administered by the City of Grimes to be used by the veteran or immediate family members.
   
Military Service Recognition Plaque
A military service plaque will be established. Each veteran's name will be placed on this plaque which title reads: "Grimes is proud to be called home to these honored veterans."
   

To take advantage of these benefits, veterans must register with the City of Grimes. Proof of veteran status is required. Acceptable forms of proof include: DD214 form, Iowa driver's license with veteran designation, or military ID card.
If a veteran is deceased, the veterans immediate family may still receive these benefits.
